I’m borrowing this idea from Daniel Pink, author of five New York Times bestsellers, including The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward.
Every night, just before you go to bed, write a single sentence in a notebook—or in a folder on your phone or computer. It might be an observation, a thought, an experience… a quote that inspires you… or even a problem you wish to solve.
For best results, let it be something that nudges you toward being more expansive, loving, imaginative, or grateful.
Pink says this practice offers several benefits. It signals to your brain that the day is complete. It invites your positive idea to percolate through your mind and body as you sleep.
And maybe most importantly, it builds an incredible archive of creativity and insight. In a year, you’ll have 350+ entries. In five years, more than 1,500.
All from devoting just one minute a day to this simple ritual.
Being expansive doesn’t require selling your house or moving across the world. You can shift your life’s trajectory with just a minute a day.
One last thought…
In my experience working with clients week after week, I’ve noticed something curious. If they’re scheduled to meet with me on, say, Tuesday morning, then Monday night often triggers the question:
“What am I going to tell Bruce tomorrow?”
My guess is your mind will adopt a similar habit. As you move through each day, you’ll begin to wonder:
“What expansive sentence will I write down tonight?”
And soon, it will feel as natural as brushing your teeth.
