Many people come to Sedona for the energy vortexes that are said to emanate from the area’s red rocks. We are here for a week because we are tired of waiting for it to snow in Park City.
Yesterday, we climbed 750 feet pretty much straight up to the top of Cathedral Rock. Here’s what it looks like at the top, courtesy of Chantae.com:
Or at least we thought this was the top, like most others do. But on the way up, a guy told us, “When you get to the top, go left.” He was insistent.
Turning left took us away from most other hikers. We walked a very narrow rock ridge that barely jutted out from the red rock spires, and curved around the back. It felt like a hidden passageway. Then we saw a steep rock face with enough handholds on it that we could scamper up on all fours. Think of a 100-foot slide at the top of a mountain, and you get the idea.
At the top, we found a bride and groom, along with a photographer and two assistants:
(You really have to admire their determination to get excellent wedding photographs. I’m betting they have a spectacular life.)
In Sedona, it can be difficult to discern whether there is mystic energy everywhere or it is just so unbelievably beautiful that you create your own damn energy. Here’s a photo I took on the climb up. Pay special attention to the images created by the sun’s brilliance (or so you would assume:
Around here, people might make the case that you are seeing guardian angels frolicking in the morning’s light. It would be lovely if this is true.
One thing I can say for certain is that this place has a way of making you look two and even three times at reality. I keep thinking that I see something—a saying on a t-shirt, a person who looks a certain way—and then a second or two later, the saying has changed and the person has shifted form. This is never blatant like a movie special effect; it’s much more subtle, so that I keep saying to myself, “I must have been mistaken.”
No matter. I love experiences and places that take me out of my normal highly logical mode and open me up to a different way of thinking… and being.
Please let me know what you think about that last photo…
So beautiful - thanks for sharing. Life is.good and full of magic if we open our eyes and hearts to receive.
