Wildfire!
Here’s a photo I took Saturday afternoon around 1:45 p.m., driving from Salt Lake City up to my home in Park City. Two wildfires had just ignited by the side of the road, allegedly because of a single car’s malfunctioning catalytic converter.
A few hours later, the fire was reported to be 1,500 acres and was threatening thousands of homes just a mile or two away. But huge planes like this one—along with numerous smaller planes and helicopter, plus 120 firefighters—were already fighting back.
It is a very strange feeling to spend the weekend with giant planes overhead, making run after run to dump water and fire retardant. (Fortunately, our neighborhood is about seven miles from the current fire activity.)
As I write this, over 6,000 people are still under a mandatory evacuation order, but the fire is down to under 600 acres. (Unfortunately, the hot spots are now 1/2 mile away from some homes.)
What matters most to me today is that despite “our divisions,” at a time like this no one cares about whether you think this or that. We all just come together.
What matters most to you, today?
