Anita Hodosi hypnotized me yesterday.
In a session that lasted 90 minutes, I went so deep it was extremely difficult at the end to figure out how to—as instructed—move my fingers and toes and remember that I have a body.
The goal, to the degree we had one, was to see where “I” might go when freed of the obligation to be in this lifetime.
I ended up in an incredibly peaceful and undefined space… sort of like outer space before it was outer space. It felt like pure awareness, independent of all the stuff that typically occupies my mind: thoughts, needs, priorities, goals and attachments.
Think of an introvert who finally gets to curl up alone by a fireplace with a good book. (Now, preserve that feeling, and remove the fireplace and book.)
It wasn’t a deeply serious, momentous experience.
It was fun.
I got to play with reality.
I got to relax and leave behind the busyness of daily life.
In my coaching and writing work, I sometimes encounter people who are “working hard” on a personal quality or tendency: to be more disciplined or focused, for example.
But perhaps it would be more effective to play with reality in small doses? Anita did a wonderful job of making me feel safe, and I trust her enough that no matter what I say under hypnosis, it will be fine.
During my session, I got to be a radically curious observer on a grand scale. I was hanging out as new universes were bubbling into existence, some successfully and others not so much. I had no judgment or opinion, only curiosity.
Again, it was fun… and a wonderful break from get up at 7 a.m., exercise, meditate, eat, work, eat, walk, socialize, eat, work, meditate, talk, sleep.
Much as I love my life, I also love temporarily stepping away from it, moving past logic and intellect and being open to what happens next.
How do you play with reality? (This isn’t a rhetorical question. Please comment below.)
